Water Treatment

The world has become a better and cleaner place to live with the development of water purification systems. Water purification involves many processes. There are many negative health results from not having clean water. The WHO is responsible for creating guidelines on what's acceptable water purification techniques. Water purification involves many processes."Water purification is the removal of contaminants from untreated water to produce drinking water that is pure enough for its intended use, most commonly human consumption”. The combination of the following is what has to be followed in order to clean water. Pre-chlorination is one step that eliminates many waterborne illnesses. Adding chlorine to water, it helps reduce bacteria and algae. Aeration is another important step it involves passing the liquid through air. Another step is Coagulation, in this step the dirty water particles accumulate at the top or bottom of water (sedimentation) and then is vacuumed. Desalination is way to get salt out of water. Many different disinfectants are put into water to purify it.
There are many negative health results from not having clean water. "Waterborne illnesses are estimated to cause 1.8 million deaths each year". Preparation of food using infected water is the main reason for diarrheal disease: "accounts which accounts for an estimated 4.1% of the total DALY global burden of disease and is responsible for the deaths of 1.8 million people every year. In my country (Dominican Republic) we have to be very cautious about drinking water and eating produce. We have to boil all of our cooking water, drink bottled water and wash all fruits and vegetables with chlorine.
The WHO is the World Heath Organization and they are responsible for making sure that water worldwide is being cleaned. In this website this organization explains its plans in making sure that each country is cleaning water the right way. http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/dwq/gdwq3_2.pdf there is a framework that has plans such as guideline and requirements for safe drinking water, safety plans and surveillance to make sure its working.
In conclusion, the world has become a better and cleaner place to live with the development of water purification systems. Fortunately the US has a great cleaning system and I don't have to worry about drinking water from the faucet. Unsafe drinking water has been said to be the leading cause of sickness and deaths in the world. The truth of the matter is that we are made of 60% water and we need it for every aspect of survival. It should be our number one priority to help keep water clean for everyone.
